When you Google the word, “wedding,” you’re bound to see images that look all too familiar. A color scheme that includes white or blush hues, bright florals and posed ballroom dancing are just a few that stay top of mind.
Social media, television shows and romantic comedies have influenced our interpretation of weddings so much that certain elements are automatically associated with the wedding season. We aren’t shaming those choices at all, but know it’s important to offer up ways to incorporate who you and your fiancé are.
Here at Purposely Designed Event Planning, we encourage our clients to think out of the box, and make sure the wedding they want isn’t a duplicate of someone else’s. There are certain pieces of the wedding planning puzzle that make it so much easier to inject you and your partner’s personality into your wedding day.
Why is personality important?
You already know your wedding is more than just “a day.” Taking the extra steps to ensure that every part of it screams “you” will make it feel so much more special. You’d hate to look back on your wedding day, and not feel it was something that truly represented you both.
Here are a few ways to give your wedding guests further insight into your love story, beyond the vows and speeches.
Color is a great way to showcase both you and your fiancé’s charm. Besides the venue, the color scheme is usually top of mind for couples. Although the traditional white, blush or gold do a great job of representing weddings, use this opportunity to explore even further. Dig into your favorite colors, and even color psychology to determine what you want to express visually.
Segmenting the color of attire is a great way to build out the aesthetic that you and your fiance envision. Your guests could wear a specific color, or even your bridal party can play with shades of the same color. Pastels, moody, earthy or jewel tones can all bring another layer of dimension during your wedding day.
Play with your color scheme, and have fun, so that you create impact without saying a word.
Music is a powerful tool during weddings. From the ceremony, to the cocktail hour and reception, sound can create a vibe like no other for your guests.
To begin curating the musical flow, we suggest creating a list of emotions that you want to feel on your wedding day. The usual ones will come up, such as joy, love and happiness. Once you’ve decided on that list of emotions, create a list of songs that make you and your fiancé feel that way. This can be the start of your wedding day playlist.
Along with choosing songs to play throughout the day, if music has been an integral part of your relationship, you can incorporate it into your seating chart. Choose a few songs that are important to you and your fiancé, and use them to name your tables, replacing the traditional table numbers. Each song can be played to signal to your guests that it’s their turn to head to the buffet.
You can add in even more flair by including modern or popular music into your first dance, or specialty dances, such as father/daughter, mother/son etc.
You can use music as a tool throughout the day, and go beyond the single use of getting folks out on the dance floor.
Although seemingly small in size, décor can add up to a huge impact. It’s what your guests witness when they first encounter your wedding, and what initially takes their breath away. So how do you add a touch of personality when decorating?
Incorporate pictures of you and your fiancé in your wedding décor, so you can show up in more ways than one. Centerpieces, cocktail hour backdrops, life-size cutouts and photo booth overlays are all amazing options.
Another way to add personality into your wedding décor is switching out a traditional guest book for a more functional item. Your guests could sign a canvas that could be hung in your home. Jenga game pieces with guest names could be created for future game nights. You could also opt for a telephone guest book, where guests leave you voicemail messages with well wishes, advice and an outpouring of love.
These are all amazing ways to go above and beyond for your wedding, as you display your love throughout the entire experience. When you incorporate unique touches like these, you and your guests will have memories that last a lifetime.
